Ocean of Compassion

An ancient prayer of devotion, the text originates from verses 4 and 5 of the Shiva Mānasa Pūjā. It was composed by Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century. The sitarist Josh Feinberg is one of the most gifted western disciples of the great Ali Akbar Khan, and he has been featured as a performer in the foremost Indian classical music festivals in India, touring worldwide to rave reviews.

Ātmā Tvaṃ Girijā Matiḥ Sahacarāḥ Prāṇāḥ Śarīraṃ Gṛhaṃ
Pūjā Te Viṣayopabhogaracanā Nidrā Samādhisthitiḥ
Sañcāraḥ Padayoḥ Pradakṣina Vidhiḥ Stotrāni Sarvā Giro
Yadyatkarma Karomi Tattadakhilam Śambho Tavārādhanam

Karacaraṇakṛtam Vāk Kāyajaṃ Karmajaṃ Vā
Śravaṇanayanajaṃ Vā Mānasaṃ Vāparadham
Vihitam Avihitaṃ Vā Sarvam Etat Kṣamasva
Jaya Jaya Karunābdhe Śrīmahādeva Śambho

Translation by Paul Muller-Ortega:
You are my very Self! Parvatī is my mind! My five prāṇas are Your attendants! My body is Your abode! All the delights and pleasure of my senses are as offerings to be made in Your worship! My sleep is Your state of samādhi! Wherever I walk, I am circumbulating You! Everything that I say is said in praise and adoration of You! Every action that I perform is done as an act of devotion to You! O Śambu, Benevolent Lord of Happiness!

Whatever negative actions I may have committed—with my hands, feet, voice, body, actions, ears, eyes, or mind, whether they are prohibited or not—may it please You to patiently and graciously forgive them all!

All praise, all victory to You, who are the very Ocean of Compassion, O Great God, O Benevolent Lord of Happiness!
